First edition of an interesting account of the exploration of Niger with information about the natural history of the region and of the different tribes.The British Niger Expedition of 1841 was commissioned by the government to explore the course of the River Niger and make trade treaties with the local rulers to prohibit the slave trade. However, the expedition was forced to end prematurely when most of the crew were struck down with fever. Despite this Commander Allen succeeded in signing three treaties with the most influential potentates on the river. Hess & Coger 6939. De Gramont p.207.
